Hay poco de qué entusiasmarse con el P3 a menos que esté buscando un reemplazo asequible del P2 que sea un 30 % más rápido y tenga capacidades de hasta 4 TB. Si tiene PCIe 4.0 o tiene la intención de pasar a un sistema con él, el P3 es la opción económica y sensata.
Si se pregunta acerca de la convención de numeración de los módulos Crucial (Micron) NVMe, entonces no está solo. Primero, Crucial lanzó el P1, una unidad de factor de forma M.2 pero SATA, no el módulo NVMe.
Luego lanzó la P2, una unidad NVMe genuina pero pesadamente lenta. Seguido por el P5, un dispositivo de almacenamiento mucho más rápido con una opción Plus que admitía operaciones mejoradas utilizando el modo PCIe 4.0.
Entonces, ¿seguramente la próxima unidad debería ser una P6? No, Crucial confunde nuestras expectativas con un P3.
Viene, como el P5, en un diseño base P3 creado para sistemas PCIe 3.0 y una opción P3 Plus mejorada que admite el mayor ancho de banda que ofrece PCIe 4.0.

Aquellos que esperan algo espectacular en términos de ingeniería eléctrica o distribución de calor se sentirán decepcionados. Es una placa típica M.2 2280 de un solo lado donde todos los chips están montados en una superficie y convenientemente ocultos por una etiqueta.
Una rareza es que hay etiquetas en ambos lados, una al revés, y la de abajo revela que el módulo fue fabricado en México, y la garantía se anula si quita esa etiqueta. Curiosamente, esa etiqueta que no puedes quitar no es la que cubre las fichas.
Al igual que con todos los módulos Crucial recientemente, viene en el empaque más rentable que se pueda imaginar. El módulo está dentro de una bandeja de burbujas de plástico junto con un tornillo de montaje muy apreciado y alguna documentación minimalista. La inclusión del tornillo es una acción simple pero reflexiva que podría ser fundamental para cualquier persona que extravíe estos elementos evasivos.
Lo que ofrece el P3 es un nivel de rendimiento que estaba en lo más alto de lo que ofrecían las unidades NVMe antes de que llegara PCIe 4.0, un salto significativo con respecto al P2 anterior. Lo que no obtiene es ningún disipador de calor, LED ni nada que haga que este módulo parezca único. Tampoco ofrece cifrado de hardware, a diferencia del antiguo Samsung 980 Pro.
Sin embargo, viene en capacidades de 4 TB para aquellos que trabajan con conjuntos de datos más grandes.

Su predecesor, el P2, usaba módulos Micron 3D NAND y un controlador Phison. El P3 usa el NAND5 de 176 capas de Micron, pero los fabricantes no dicen qué controlador se usa en este o en su hermano P3 Plus.
Esta vaguedad sobre lo que hay exactamente en un módulo no es una timidez exclusiva de Crucial, es algo que las empresas de electrónica de consumo de todo el mundo están haciendo, pero no ayuda a los clientes potenciales a tomar decisiones estratégicas sobre las piezas que desean.
El rendimiento citado del P3 es de 3500 MB/s de lectura y 3000 MB/s de escritura, lo que lo coloca a la altura de Samsung y Kingston.
Pero esos niveles de rendimiento no se encuentran en todas las capacidades, ya que la opción de 500 GB solo ofrece escritura secuencial a 1900 MB/s. Por esta razón, probablemente sugeriría mantenerse alejado del modelo más pequeño, incluso si es el más barato.
Para las otras capacidades, estas velocidades fueron innovadoras hace solo unos años, aunque la llegada de las unidades PCIe 4.0 con velocidades de lectura de hasta 7000 MB/s las ha hecho parecer marginalmente menos impresionantes.
Para aquellos con sistemas PCI 3.0, el P3 es tan rápido como esta interfaz permite que funcionen las unidades, y vale la pena señalar que desde que apareció, el P5 ha desaparecido de la gama Crucial. Esto insinúa que reemplaza no solo al P2 anterior sino también al P5.

Probé el P3 de 1 TB y el P3 Plus de 1 TB en un equipo de prueba habilitado con Ryzen PCIe 4.0 y descubrí que las muestras proporcionadas funcionaron según lo previsto por Crucial, si no ligeramente mejor.
El uso de la prueba predeterminada CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 proporcionó velocidades de lectura de 3677 MB/s y escritura de 3230 MB/s. Otras pruebas sintéticas, como AS SSD y AJA, respaldaron este balance, ciertamente con números ligeramente menos optimistas.
La prueba ATTO reveló prácticamente el mismo rendimiento, pero también la arquitectura de esta unidad le permite alcanzar el máximo rendimiento potencial con un tamaño de E/S más pequeño.
Mientras que la mayoría de las unidades NVMe no se ponen en marcha hasta que transfieren tamaños de 256 K, 512 K o incluso 1 MB en el caso de la P2, esta unidad funciona a toda velocidad con solo 64 K. Por lo que es una buena opción para aquellos con muchos archivos más pequeños.
Al igual que con muchos diseños de NVMe en la actualidad, el almacenamiento en caché parece estar basado en SLC, lo que permite un rendimiento decente para escrituras grandes hasta el punto de que la relación SLC de 1 a 3 agota el almacenamiento disponible. Lo que falta aquí es el cifrado de hardware o cualquier demanda de energía citada.
La falta de encriptación no es un gran problema para la mayoría de los clientes, pero no tener información sobre el consumo de energía no es útil para los usuarios de computadoras portátiles que funcionan con batería.
Como el P3 no tiene ningún disipador de calor y, en cambio, depende de la gestión del chip térmico, podría acelerarse en los confines de la instalación de una computadora portátil.
El TBW citado (total de bytes escritos) está en el lado bajo en comparación con el P5. El P5 de 1 TB tenía un TBW de 600 TB, mientras que el P3 solo ofrece 220 TB. A menos que brutalice su almacenamiento NVMe, esto podría no ser un problema, pero claramente, algunos cambios en el diseño han mejorado el rendimiento al sacrificar la resistencia.
El P3 es sin duda mejor que el P2, pero también es mejor que el P5 original (no el P5 plus). Sin embargo, si tiene un sistema PCIe 4.0, puede obtener un 40 % más de velocidad con un P3 Plus por solo otros $10.

Precio y disponibilidad
El Crucial P3 se puede comprar directamente de Crucial a $49,99/£49,19, $89,99/£89,99, $174,99/£173,99 y $349,99/£347,99 para los modelos de 500 GB, 1, 2 y 4 TB, respectivamente. Mi hoja de cálculo de Excel dice que la mejor unidad de valor son los modelos de 2 TB y 4 TB, y la peor es la de 500 GB donde la compre.

La ventaja de Crucial sobre otras marcas es que fabrica sus propios módulos NAND a través de Micron, lo que reduce los costos generales.
NAND como producto básico ha estado en caída libre recientemente, y la noticia de que SK Hynix tiene una nueva NAND TLC 4D de 238 capas y 512 Gb que estará lista para la producción en 2023 no es la noticia que Micron quería escuchar.
